Container fertilizer basics: the numbers, the rates, the schedule

Containers leak nutrients by design — every watering carries some fertility out the drain holes. That one fact explains most of how container feeding differs from a garden bed.

What N-P-K actually says

The three numbers on every fertilizer label are the guaranteed analysis: percent by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P2O5), and potash (K2O), in that fixed order. A 10-10-10 granular is 10% of each — so 70% of the bag is carrier. The rough division of labor: nitrogen builds leaves, phosphorus supports roots and flowering, potassium supports fruit fill and stress tolerance. That's why leafy-green feeds run nitrogen-heavy, and "tomato food" runs comparatively low-N and high-K — a tomato fed like a lettuce grows a beautiful bush with no tomatoes on it.

Why containers need their own schedule

A garden bed holds nutrients in a large volume of soil with clay and organic matter to grip them. A pot holds a small volume of soilless mix with very little grip, and it gets watered until water runs out the bottom — correctly, per our watering schedule guide — which flushes dissolved nutrients with it. Most bagged potting mixes include a starter charge of fertilizer that carries seedlings for roughly the first few weeks; after that, the plants are eating only what you add. So container feeding is the inverse of bed feeding: smaller doses, more often.

The standard regimen extension services recommend: mix a slow-release granular into the pot at planting, then supplement with a water-soluble feed once plants are established — at full label rate every 1–2 weeks, or the gentler version of half rate every week. Bigger thirstier plants in bigger pots (see the container size chart) sit at the frequent end of that range; herbs, and anything in a mix rich in compost, at the sparse end.

Organic analyses vary by batch — the numbers above are typical label values, not constants. The practical difference: synthetics are immediately available and act in days, which also means they can burn roots in days if overdosed. Organics release as soil microbes break them down, which makes them slower, more forgiving, and less prone to washing out — at the cost of needing warmth and a longer lead time to act.

The over-fed column has one universal fix: stop feeding and flush the container with plain water — several times the pot's volume, run slowly through until it drains clear — to carry the accumulated salts out. Then resume at half strength. Under-feeding fixes itself within a week or two of resuming a normal schedule; it's the gentler mistake of the two.

Rates here describe typical label guidance for common US retail products; the label on your specific product wins, since analyses and concentrations differ. "Organic" is used in the gardening sense of derived from plant, animal, or mineral sources, not as a certification claim.
